Catania’s Botanical Garden has faced a long journey since its foundation in 1858. It was influenced by the secular history of the land which is partially composed of volcanic soil. The garden preserves elements from the past and leads them in contemporary times through evolutions and renovations. This is the case of the Tepidarium or Great Greenhouse, made of iron and crystals to imitate the Serra Carolina in the Botanical Garden of Palermo. The Tepidarium was recently rebuilt after the original was demolished due to the damages suffered during the Second World War. Today the greenhouse is evolving into a more efficient and self-sufficient architecture for botanical conservation, without the use of polluting pesticides and toxines.
