Nuova Gussonea Botanic Garden is established inside the Etna natural park and is a center for biological research and enhancement of the volcano’s ecological environment. The natural scenery presented by the steep slopes of the most active volcano in Europe is the suggestive background to the collections of Etna's flora and plant communities housed in the garden. Nuova Gussonea is precisely organized to preserve and study the biodiversity of the area. The forests on the volcanic slopes have been restored and protected thanks to the efforts of scientists and professionals who cover the trees during the harsh winters with special structures made of wood and ferns to preserve the heat inside without hiding the light.
